Competitive cooperation: the makeathon development competition

Contestants in action

From the idea to implementation in 30 hours: The Makeathon - in cooperation with ITQ and Conrad Electronic - is targeted at young professionals and students from the fields of software engineering, mechatronics and mechanical engineering. More than 100 participants formed competing teams to develop software and hardware prototypes within the areas of robotics, Internet of Things, and automation.

Witnessing solutions coming to life: The automatica Makeathon is a chance to witness the development process of software and hardware hacks first hand. The collaborative competition that was first held in 2016 captivated participants and spectators right from the start. This successful event helps the leading exhibition to address new target groups and strengthen its position as a driver of innovation in the areas of smart automation and robotics.

More than 100 talented young contestants took the challenge to find functional solutions for Industry 4.0 at the Makeathon—under real-life conditions in just 30 hours. Who were the participants? Competing teams of young software developers as well as mechanical and mechatronics engineers. Who was in the audience? Representatives of the manufacturing sector who came to meet the innovators of tomorrow.

Those were the Highlights in 2016

From an automated shoe for senior citizens and an entire digital factory integrated in a production line all the way to a healthy fitness drink: The distinguished jury selected the following ideas from the first automatica Makeathon as the most innovative projects:

  • nutriFIT
The winning team of four students from Munich is all about a healthy diet. The machine developed by them produces fitness drinks matched to the individual profile of any given individual. The user creates a nutrition profile in a mobile app that feeds the data to an algorithm to determine the ideal customized shake recipe.

  • Poke-Mon
What might the video call of the future be like? It may involve a miniature robot that simulates human motions. For example, he is capable of holding a smart phone and interacting with people.

  • Solemove
SOS signal from the shoe: A special insole detects falls and informs family, caregivers or neighbors with an emergency text message. A GPS module and a gyroscopic sensor send data sets to a microcomputer that analyzes the measured forces and looks for characteristic fall patterns. The smart sole is capable of learning and will adapt to the wearer.

  • SpinalCo
For a good posture. The medical back cushion facilitates finding the correct sitting posture via a web application. For this, the current body posture is analyzed with a movable frame and transmitted to a computer.

  • ASAP
Don’t fear the cookie monster: An automatic Nerf shooting system protects cookies and other sweets. As soon as the cookie monster appears within sight of the camera, a software activates the Nerf gun, instantly points it at the target with servo motors and shoots a foam arrow.
